    History

    Founded in 1781

    Nestled in the scenic Cumberland River valley at the gateway to Pine Mountain, Pineville stands as one of Kentucky's oldest settlements, first established in 1781 as Cumberland Ford. The community was formally renamed Pineville in 1870 and incorporated in 1873 , becoming the seat of Bell County. This historic crossing point on the Wilderness Road served as a vital passage through "The Narrows" where early pioneers and Native Americans forged paths into the Kentucky frontier. From its roots as a frontier settlement to its growth during the coal mining era, Pineville has preserved its rich heritage while embracing community revitalization and tourism centered around its natural beauty and mountain culture.
